Our Rights, Our Liberties

By admin - Last updated: Saturday, December 10, 2011

December 10, the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, is the day the Nobel Prizes created in his will are presented, the science and literature prizes in Stockholm, the Peace Prize in Oslo. It is also United Nations Human Rights Day.

This Wear Your Rights T-shirt is one of a series created by the Council of Europe in honor of the various articles contained in the European Convention on Human Rights. The reminder is very useful at a time when some right wing politicians in Britain actually argue for the repeal of human rights legislation there.

For some reason the T-shirts in this series are not for sale in the Council of Europe giftshop, but have to be ordered online-

Verdun – They Shall Not Pass

By admin - Last updated: Monday, November 28, 2011

The city of Verdun was surrounded by a ring of fortresses during World War I. Where other French strongpoints fell, Verdun withstood the German invasion, but between 1914 and 1918 between 700,000 and 1 million lost their lives in the fight for Verdun.

We visited Verdun in early November 2011, a few days before Armistice Day. Perhaps it was just our knowing what happened there, but it seemed a sad place, despite the banner proclaiming it the “City of Peace”. Like many places in France, the concept of selling commemorative T-shirts seemed to have missed Verdun completely.

I ordered this one online from a site called Zazzle as soon as we got back from Verdun. I had hopes of it arriving in time for Armistice Day, November 11. Instead it arrived on November 28, apparently shipped from California, even though I ordered from their French website.
