Stasbourg Universitydates back to 1631, and today is the result of the 2009 refusion of the Louis Pasteur University, Marc Bloch University, and Robert Schuman University. With 42,000 students, it is no small school, and the students are very high profile in a city of just under 500,000.

Got this at the city tourist office in the square next to the cathedral, but I’ve seen it for sale at ordinary tourist souvenir shops as well.

Vincent

“The Starry Night” by Vincent van Gogh, who died the day after he was shot (traditionally he shot himself, more recently has come a theory that he was shot by accident by village boys), in the village of Auvers-sur-Oise, outside Paris, in July 1890. The subject of the Don McLean song “Vincent”.

Bought at the Voyages au Temp de Impressionnistes museum in the village chateux, a wonderful museum about the Impressionist painters, many of whom like van Gogh stayed and painted in the village. This shortly after visiting the Maison de Van Gogh, the van Gogh museum in the inn where he lived during the last 10 weeks of life, a period during which he painted more than 70 paintings.
